Maud de Jong

Before Singapore we were in Holland, Paris and Stockholm. When you first arrive here, everything seems glitter and glamour. But working in the soup kitchen was an eye opener, I never knew they make and deliver 5,000 meals a day, meaning that as many people depend on that food. It also struck me that many volunteers are there 3 days a week and have been doing so for years, they are very dedicated. We helpmaud-de-jonged cook and package food in containers, and then went along on one of the delivery-runs. The people in the kitchen made us feel very welcome, and they were really happy that we came when we did, because some other people cancelled at the last minute. They said “You were sent by the angels!”.

“Volunteering for NCA made me realize I am very privileged. It also makes it easier to accept when things are not going your way. You don’t become a better person, but you become a more complete person. I’ve noticed in my time in Singapore, even in my group of friends, that not everyone is aware that so many people really struggle. Getting involved allows you to see it.”

Maud volunteers for NCA in various ways: you can find her behind the NCA table at expat fairs and she is also active at our charities. This picture was taken during the morning we went to help at Willing Hearts Soup Kitchen and with Maud is Mr. Tony Tay, the founder of Willing Hearts. Would you like to help out next time? We organize these events regularly during the year. Want to come next time? Check out this page for dates and more information.

The members and volunteers at NCA are our lifeblood. Some people join as members, and attend our events, and they are happy to contribute that way. Others like to volunteer to sell our products at the fairs, making friends and raising funds at the same time. Some really want to get to know the people behind the charity names, and they volunteer to take part in projects and outings directly with the charities. There are many, many ways to help. Today we salute some of our volunteers and ask them to tell their stories. If you would like to get involved in some way please email [email protected].
